California Privacy Addendum
Effective: 2026-11-01
This addendum is for California residents and supplements the Privacy Policy. It describes what ASL Dating collects in the categories the California Consumer Privacy Act uses, and the rights the Act gives you. Where this addendum and the Privacy Policy describe the same thing, they describe the same practice — this one just sorts it the way California asks.
1. Categories of personal information collected
Which of California's statutory categories we actually hold — including the ones we hold nothing in.
In the 12 months before the date above, ASL Dating has collected the following categories. Each is followed by what it actually consists of here, because the statutory names are broader than the practice.
Identifiers — your phone number, your first name, your account identifier, and a device identifier used for one purpose only: keeping an account removed for a safety reason from being recreated on the same phone. No email address is collected, because there is no email login. No real name beyond a first name, and no postal address.
Customer records information (Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.80) — first name and phone number. No signature, no physical characteristics, no address, no bank or card number, and no insurance or medical information.
Protected classification characteristics — your age and birthdate, your gender, and the genders you are interested in. Your Culture & Language selection is a cultural and linguistic community identity you choose and publish, not a medical or disability characteristic; Section 6 explains that further.
Commercial information — which subscription tier you hold and its status. Payment card details are not collected at all: Apple and Google are the merchant of record and hold them.
Biometric information — none. There is no facial recognition, no face template or faceprint, no scan of face geometry, no voiceprint, and no biometric identifier anywhere in the app.
Internet or network activity — how the app is used, swipe activity, and session information. No browsing history across other sites or apps, because there is no advertising or analytics SDK to collect it.
Geolocation data — approximate location, collected only while the app is open and never in the background. The stored coordinates are deliberately imprecise, and what other members see is a distance bucket of 10 miles or more.
Audio, electronic, visual, and similar information — your photos, your intro videos, your video messages, and the audio those videos capture.
Professional or employment information — the occupation you choose to put on your profile. It is not verified.
Education information — none. No education field is collected.
Inferences — limited. Match candidates are ranked by fixed rules using your filters, your swipe history, and approximate distance. No profile of your preferences, characteristics, or behavior is built, and no inference is drawn for advertising, pricing, or eligibility.
Sensitive personal information — see Section 6.
The contents of your messages are held for five days so they can be delivered and are then removed by a daily automated sweep, and a conversation that has been reported is snapshotted as evidence for up to 30 days. There is no long-term message archive.
2. Where it comes from
From you, and from your device. Nothing is bought from a data broker.
From you — everything you type, select, or upload, and anything you send to support.
From your device, with permission — approximate location while the app is open, and a device identifier for the safety purpose described above.
From your use of the app — swipes, sessions, and similar activity generated as you use it.
From the app store and subscription processing — whether a subscription was purchased, renewed, or lapsed.
From other members — a report filed about your account, which necessarily describes it.
That is the entire list. Nothing about you is bought from a data broker, obtained from an advertising network, scraped from social media, or supplied by a social login — there is no social login here. Sign-in is by text message to your own number and nothing else.
3. Why it is collected
To run the Service, keep people safe, and meet legal duties.
Creating and maintaining your account, and signing you in.
Showing your profile to other members and showing you theirs, applying the filters you set, and computing approximate distance.
Delivering your messages and video messages.
Confirming you are 18 or over.
Detecting, investigating, and acting on fraud, scams, and conduct that breaks the Terms, including automatic suspension on a report and keeping a removed account from returning.
Sending safety notices the law requires, and keeping records showing they were sent.
Processing and validating subscriptions through Apple and Google.
Answering support requests, appeals, cancellations, and privacy requests.
Fixing faults, testing, and improving the app using aggregated information that identifies nobody.
Complying with the law, responding to valid legal process, and defending or bringing legal claims.
4. Who it is disclosed to
Other members see your profile. Vendors process on our instructions only.
Disclosed to other members: your profile as it appears on your Bio — such as your first name, age, photos, intro videos, bio, Culture & Language and ASL selections, communication style, occupation, relationship goal, height, interests, love languages, horoscope, and My Vibe picks — and a bucketed distance. That is the Service working as intended, and it happens before any match exists.
Disclosed to service providers, for a business purpose only, each under a written agreement barring any use of their own:
Cloud hosting, database, and authentication.
Private video storage and delivery, and bot mitigation at sign-in.
Text message delivery.
Push notification delivery.
Subscription processing and entitlement validation.
Disclosed to others, in these circumstances only:
Where the law requires it, or in response to valid legal process.
Where it is reasonably necessary to protect someone's safety, investigate fraud, or enforce the Terms.
To safety regulators, as online-dating safety laws require. Those reports carry aggregate figures and contain no profile, photo, or message.
To the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children where a report involves a minor and referral is required.
To a buyer or successor if the business is sold or merged. You would be told before your data moved.
Affiliates receive nothing, because there are none. ASL Dating LLC has no parent, no subsidiaries, and no sister companies.
5. Sale and sharing
Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared for cross-context behavioral advertising. There is no advertising network in the app.
ASL Dating does not sell personal information, and does not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Not for money, and not for any other valuable consideration.
This is not a policy that could quietly change on a configuration flag. There is no third-party advertising network, no advertising SDK, and no analytics SDK in the app, so there is no recipient for such a disclosure and no advertising identifier to attach to one.
Because there is no sale or sharing, there is nothing to opt out of, and no "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link is shown. If that ever changes, the control will be provided before any such activity begins. An opt-out preference signal — Global Privacy Control, Do Not Track, or any successor — has nothing here to switch off. None is disregarded.
Consumers under 16. No personal information is sold or shared about anyone, and none is knowingly sold or shared about a consumer under 16. The Service is restricted to adults — you must be 18 to register, an account is removed once we learn the holder is under 18, and no advertising identifier is collected from anyone. The affirmative authorization the Act requires before selling or sharing the information of a consumer under 16 is therefore never sought, because the underlying activity does not happen.
6. Sensitive personal information
Used only to provide the Service you asked for, never to infer anything further about you.
Of the categories the Act treats as sensitive, ASL Dating handles these:
Information from which sexual orientation may be inferred — the genders you choose in Filters. They are saved on your phone, used only to choose which profiles you see, and not shown to other members.
The contents of your messages, held for five days for delivery, where ASL Dating is not the intended recipient.
Your Culture & Language selection, listed here for completeness. ASL Dating does not treat it as health information. It is a cultural and linguistic community identity that you select for yourself and publish to other members. Two of the options, Hearing and CODA, are chosen by hearing members; a CODA is a hearing child of Deaf adults. No diagnosis, hearing test, decibel measurement, treatment history, or assistive-device data is collected, and nothing you enter is reviewed or interpreted by anyone medically qualified.
And these, which the Act lists, are not collected at all:
Social security, driver's license, state ID, or passport number.
Account log-in with a password, or any financial account, debit, or card number — there is no password here and payment details go to Apple or Google.
Precise geolocation. Location is deliberately imprecise, and other members see a bucket of 10 miles or more.
Racial or ethnic origin, religious or philosophical beliefs, or union membership. No such field exists.
Biometric information used to identify you.
Personal information concerning health, sex life, or sexual activity.
Use of sensitive personal information is already limited to providing the Service. It shows your profile to compatible members and applies your filters. It is not used to infer characteristics about you, to build a profile, to set your price, to decide your eligibility, or for any advertising purpose, and it is not sold or shared.
Your right under Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.121 to limit that use is therefore already satisfied, and you do not have to close your account to exercise it. Email legal@asldatingapp.com if you would like that confirmed in writing. Deleting your account remains available at any time under Settings → Delete Account, but it is your choice rather than the price of this right.
7. How long it is kept
The same retention periods as the Privacy Policy — no separate schedule.
Retention is set by category rather than by a single figure, and the full schedule lives in the Privacy Policy. Profile data, messages, phone number, reported-conversation snapshots, minor-safety reports, report metadata, suspension records, safety-notification records, subscription records, legal-agreement acceptance records, anonymous analytics, and the other categories it lists each have their own period and their own reason.
The schedule is stated there, deliberately, and this document only points to it — the two figures repeated above, five days for messages and up to 30 days for a reported-conversation snapshot, are quoted from it. Read the schedule in the Privacy Policy under "How long things are kept".
Whatever is retained is stored securely, access-restricted, and used only for the reason it was kept — never for matching, profiling, advertising, or marketing.
8. Your California rights
Know, delete, correct, opt out, limit, and not be discriminated against for asking.
Right to know — the categories and specific pieces of personal information collected about you, the sources, the purposes, and the categories disclosed to others.
Right to delete — subject to the retention exceptions in the Privacy Policy under "How long things are kept", each of which exists because a law, a legal claim, or a safety obligation requires it.
Right to correct — most of it you can correct yourself under Settings → Edit Profile.
Right to opt out of sale or sharing — neither happens here, so nothing needs switching off.
Right to limit use of sensitive personal information — already limited, as Section 6 explains.
Right to non-discrimination — no denial of service, no different price, no different quality, and no retaliation for exercising any of these.
9. How to exercise them
Email legal@asldatingapp.com. We answer within 45 days, with one extension where the law allows.
Email legal@asldatingapp.com with "Privacy Request" in the subject line, or write to ASL Dating LLC, 8977 S 1300 W, Unit #460, West Jordan, UT 84088. An account is not required to make a request.
Include the phone number on the account so the data can be found — it is used to verify the request and for nothing else.
Further verification may be asked for a sensitive request, in proportion to what is being asked for.
A response comes within 45 days, extendable once by a further 45 days for a complex request, with notice of the extension.
If a request is refused you can appeal. Reply to the decision, or email support@asldatingapp.com with "Appeal" in the subject line. A written decision with reasons follows, and if the appeal is denied you will be given a way to complain to the Attorney General.
Authorized agents. Someone may make a request for you with written authorization signed by you and proof of their own identity. You may be asked to confirm directly that you gave that authorization.
10. California's "Shine the Light" law
You can ask what was shared with third parties for their own marketing. The answer is nothing.
Separately from the CCPA, Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.83 lets a California resident ask a business whether it disclosed personal information to third parties for those third parties' own direct-marketing use in the previous calendar year.
ASL Dating makes no such disclosure to anyone, so there is nothing to report. The service providers described in Section 4 process data on ASL Dating's instructions only, under contracts barring any use of their own, and none of them receives anything for its own marketing. If you would like that confirmed in writing, email legal@asldatingapp.com.
11. Other states
If your state gives you these rights, you have them here too, whether or not it is named.
Several states give their residents rights of the same shape, and if you live in one of them you have those rights here, whether or not your state is named — Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana, and others. They are set out in the Privacy Policy under "Your rights", along with the route, the response times, and how to appeal, and they are stated there rather than repeated here.
Washington and Nevada residents: see the Consumer Health Data page under Settings for how ASL Dating treats the Culture & Language field under those states' consumer health data laws.
